  16. <p>A trial ends with a nanny's tenuous triumph and a baffling
  17. whodunit

  19. <p>    Parents who opt for live-in child care must often search long
  20. and hard for the sort of dedicated young woman who favors
  21. pushing strollers over pursuing more glamorous careers or
  22. beer-swilling boyfriends. Last year William and Denise Fischer
  23. figured they had found the right nanny in Olivia Riner, a demure
  24. 20-year-old who had worked as a nurse's assistant in her native
  25. Switzerland and had come highly recommended by a referral
  26. agency. But only a few weeks after joining the Fischers, Riner
  27. was charged with an unthinkable crime: setting fire to the
  28. Fischers' Thornwood, N.Y., home and murdering the baby girl she
  29. had been hired to protect.
  30. </p>
  31. <p>    Although a month-long trial ended in Riner's acquittal
  32. last week, the presiding judge expressed skepticism regarding
  33. her innocence, and the case remains shrouded in mystery. "I
  34. don't start no fire," Riner repeatedly stressed in her pained
  35. English throughout the ordeal. Prosecutors never uncovered any
  36. evidence linking the au pair to the crime. Nor could they
  37. establish a motive. Yet Riner herself insisted that she and the
  38. child were alone in the house when the fire started.
  39. </p>
  40. <p>    That leaves wide open the question of who could possibly
  41. have entered the house unnoticed and set it ablaze. During the
  42. trial, Riner's attorney developed an unsubstantiated theory
  43. pointing the finger at a young man who dated William Fischer's
  44. older daughter. The defense claimed the boy was so distressed
  45. that the Fischers made him cut back on overnight visits once
  46. the baby was born that he devised a horrific plan of revenge.
  47. An independent investigator will re-examine the case.
